Owl Nesting Boxes

Different species of owls have different nesting requirements.  Our Owl Boxes are designed to provide homes for three different species of owl - Barn Owls, Tawny Owls and Little Owls - and are specifically designed to meet their individual nesting preferences.

Barn Owls

Barn Owl boxes can be sited both outside or within buildings.   The boxes are spacious to provide plenty of space for the adult birds to manoeuvre inside the box and have a landing platform to aid easy access to the box and give the young owls a safe roost outside the box as they grow to maturity.  They also have an inspection hatch to enable easy inspection and cleaning of the box - it is important to note that Barn Owls have special protection under law and it is an offence to disturb a nest site in the breeding season so boxes should only be inspected or cleaned between November and January.

Our External Barn Owl Boxes have a felted roof which overhangs the entrance and landing platform to provide protection from the weather. They can be sited on the side of a building or on a large deciduous tree but it should be noted they are very large and heavy.

Approx. maximum dimensions (ex. hanging bracket) are :

          height - 80cm, width - 75cm, depth - 75cm.

Tawny Owls

To appeal to the nesting habits of Little Owls, our Little Owl boxes feature an internal tunnel above a dark nesting area.  They also have an inspection hatch to enable easy inspection and cleaning of the box.

The roof is covered with roofing felt to provide protection from the weather and is removable in order to make it easy to fix the box securely in place.  They are can either be sited on a large deciduous tree, on the side of a building or inside a open barn or outbuilding, but should have a suitable branch or ledge near the entrance.
